The Pontiac, no Holden, no GTO, I mean Monaro, uh, er, whatever. Reintroduced in 2003, it never stuck. In fact it's already been killed off. Yep, the once great American Pontiac GTO - the car that started the muscle car era in 1964 is gone!
I think three key reasons killed it off...and these three reasons resulted in less than stellar sales. This is proof-positive that GM is waaaaaay out of touch with its heritage and American roots...have they outsourced those too?!?!
1) Lack of styling - connection with the original cars (see videos)
2) Lack of originality - it was a rebadged Australian built Monaro. Monar-what? Exactly!
3) Poor marketing - you can't take an unknown car from "down under" and simply rebadge it. We are talking about one of THE defining cars in automotive history. Where was the marketing? Hello?!?
Here are some great commercials
1966...
2005...
Should I stay or should I go? I guess it's "go".
Please GM! Build an affordable, well-built, muscle car and market it! Race it! Have some band write a song about it......oh wait, you already did that back in 1964. Well, DO IT AGAIN!!!
